I am Robert Hemphill. I am 14 years old, and a fifth generation rancher in Lassen County. I like drawing, hanging out with friends and playing football and wrestling. At times I am stubborn and funny. In the future, I would like to become an Agriculture Commissioner. I chose to do a steer project because I wanted a new experience and this steer was muscular and gentle compared to the rest of the herd. At first he was high-headed and stubborn, but over time I fed him dry and wet cob 2 times a day along with meadow grass hay. After seeing him on his knees with his head under the gate trying to get more grain, I learned his appetite was a way to get his cooperation. He would head butt me whenever I was trying to adjust the halter on him, so I put him in the chute and took off and on his halter until he quit this habit. I also brushed and petted him so he would become more gentle. I led him on walks for an hour a day. One time, while I was leading him, he jumped into a water trough but I was able to get him out. I came back in that evening to feed him, he was in there again. Another time he got out and wandered around my ranch. I found him at my pole barn eating hay bales. This strong willed and muscular but kind steer earned his name Rocky.
